The Millicans’ story has incredible roots. Winston’s great-great-grandfather, E.E. Risien, is credited with finding the “Mother” Pecan tree in San Saba, which produced a pecan with a thinner shell that people could break apart more easily to revel the meat. He used pecans from this tree to plant an orchard, conducted research into pollen qualities and grafted trees together, beginning the development of many varieties of pecan trees still utilized by other orchards.
During college, the Millicans had the idea of moving away from their traditional wholesale model and developing products like pecan butter and candy from their crop and became one of the earliest pecan companies to use the internet to sell their goods. Winston noted that A&M professors helped them to become successful. “There were so many useful classes and helpful experts that led us to where we are today,” he said. "If you want to know anything about pecans, you're going to want to talk to smeone from Texas A&M."
Many of their products, like their pecan pie, started as a family recipe that they scaled up for production. "We want to share out love for this product with families from all around, " Kristen said. "We're not just creating food; we're creating memories."
The Millicans believe that Texas A&M is creating the next generation of agriculturalists. "There is so much to be taught and Texas A&M has done a great job of keeping the flame going in agriculture," Kristen said. "It's an industry that needs to be advocated for."
The Millicans try to make it to College Station at least once every football season and they love to attend the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences tailgate and visit with their peers and professors. "You get to see new people every year and watch how the Aggie agricultural legacy is being continued," Winston said.
Their oldest daughter, Anna, has already taken an interest in continuing the Aggie legacy for the family and can't wait to begin her own Aggie journey. She hopes to be part of the Class of '29.
]]>Here are some tips for choosing the best corporate gift ideas to show appreciation for your employees and reward your most loyal customers.
Corporate gifts demonstrate a company’s commitment to its partnerships. Moreover, these unique gifts can support your branding campaigns without denting your budget.
Choosing the best corporate gifts for your customers and clients can be quite a challenge with so many choices around. Select gifts that are classy but functional. While we all love expensive artwork and luxury décor pieces, do not choose any gift that your recipient may not like, such as jewelry items or men’s wallets.
One of the safest choices for corporate gifts is wholesome foods, nuts, or seeds. That’s because nuts are rich in all essential nutrients. A bag of chopped pecans or assorted nuts is full of vitamins, antioxidants, protein, and minerals. These items are generally low in carbs and high in fats, so weight-watchers and everyone loves snacking on nuts and seeds.
Here are a few ways to present unique corporate gifts to your clients and customers.
Who doesn’t love munching on roasted pecan pieces? Present a nutrient-packed pecan gift tin to your most loyal customers and dedicated employees. The tin can feature different sizes and roasted varieties of pecans along with other goodies. Whether you choose milk chocolate, salted, or sweet and spicy flavors, the recipients will thank you for this fantastic gift.
Pick a combination of different types of Chocolate Caramel Pecan Caramillicans that are incredibly popular among people of all ages. The best part is that you can pack these butter-rich and caramel pecans in a fancy box to make a gorgeous pack.
Who can say no to butter cups, especially when they come with pecans? You can choose either white or dark chocolate for your cupcakes to woo your customers and clients. Made from fresh pecan butter and covered in milk chocolate or can come in a combination box of white, milk and dark chocolate.
The butter is loaded with nutrition, making a jar of creamy pecan butter the perfect addition to your breakfast or evening snacks. Top nutritionists and doctors recommend using pecan butter instead of regular butter because of its extensive health benefits.
If you are looking for the best quality pecan gifts for your clients and customers, Millican Pecan is a trusted and reliable brand. The company harvests and shell pecans at their own orchard. The next time you are looking for a classy and delicious treat as a corporate gift, don’t forget to check out a variety of choices at Millican Pecan. Artisan bakers and seasoned chocolatiers at Millican Pecan create scrumptious pecan delights so that you can present them to your customers and employees as corporate gifts.
Growing pecans is my favorite thing to grow beside kids. I guess this is due to the fact that I didn’t plant them and they will be here long after I am gone. The longevity of the trees gives me a great responsibility to take care of them and to leave them in better condition than I found them. If they are neglected for a year, it might be reflected in my income for several years. It is very rewarding to take care of and nurture a pecan orchard. Irrigating, shredding and keeping the orchard raked up gives me pride in my work. I think of it as yard work except on a much larger scale.
Another great thing about growing pecans is the fellowship we have during harvest. Family and employees that have become friends always gather around the campfire during harvest to eat a hot meal. The majority of the time, an elaborate spread, prepared by my uncle Deen, will be enjoyed in the orchards. Everyone knows that when you smell smoke a good meal is not far off. It is amazing that anything cooked over a hot bed of coals (pecan hickory wood, of course!) always taste better!
Above all, a life in agriculture is not for everyone. With the adverse weather that we have experienced the last few years, you have got to rely on something larger and grander than yourself. God is in control and without faith in him, this would be just an unfulfilling job, not a calling.
-Winston Millican

]]>Have you ever had a fresh pecan? The buttery, soft crunch is a signature characteristic that keeps customers coming back. When you are interested in quality, going fresh is usually the best choice.
Buying pecans in bulk or wholesale from a trusted source will guarantee a fresh supply. This is because, as opposed to getting some from the store, fresh pecans can be frozen and last for as long as two years. Lasting freshness is not the only reason to buy in bulk. Pecans are rich in nutrients, containing over 19 vitamins and minerals, including antioxidants to help boost your immune system.
Improving your diet is much easier to do when you have daily access to a bulk of healthy foods. Did you know, just a handful of pecans a day can help lower your cholesterol levels? According to the American Heart Association, pecans are an excellent source of natural fat and fiber, which should be necessary staples in everyone’s diet. The high-fat and fiber content helps keep you feeling full longer. Staying pleasantly satisfied between meals helps with weight management.
Pecans are a great source of monounsaturated fats which studies have shown works to lower bad (LDL) cholesterol. When a build-up of fatty acids develops along the arterial walls, the chances of heart disease or stroke increases. Healthy (HDL) cholesterol carries the bad cholesterol away from the heart, keeping the arteries clear. Pecan nuts can help create a well-balanced lipids profile supporting your overall cardiovascular health.
Pecans sold in stores are often batches harvested months before making it to the shelves. Millican Pecan is dedicated to maintaining quality freshness by sending them directly from their orchards. The main differences between orchard-fresh Millican Pecans and grocery stores are the presentation and the flavor.
Most grocery stores carry pecans that were picked anywhere from two to four seasons prior and are typically Grade 2 pecans. They are also sent through a cooking process, which makes them more brittle. Millican Pecans does not undergo a cooking process, are Grade 1 fancy pecans and are picked fresh every season.
Millican Pecan offers bulk pricing options for pecan halves, pieces, and flour. There are various sizes you can get depending on what type of pecans you choose. The pecan halves come in six sizes and the pecan pieces come in five sizes.
The Native (topper) pecan halves can be bought in bulk at 651lb (1431kg) or more. Medium halves can be purchased in bulk at 551 to 650lb (1201 to 1430kg). Large halves can be ordered in bulk at 451 to 550lb (991 to 1200kg). The medium, large, and jumbo halves are also available for special orders. The Jr. Mammoth pecan halves are available in bulk as well at 251 to 300lb (551 to 660kg). If you are looking for giant pecans, mammoth halves can be acquired at bulk orders of 250lb (550kg) or less.
Chopped pecans vary in sizes from midget to extra large. Midget bits are over 6/64” through 12/64” and are available for special order. Small pieces run over 12/64” through 16/64” with the medium sizes being over 16/64” and through 24/64”. Large pecan pieces are over 24/64” through 32/64”. The extra-large pecan pieces are over 32/64” through 36/64” and are also available for special order.
Millican Pecan offers pecan meal for all your baking, cooking, and brewing needs. Pecan meal is well-crushed through to 4/64” or one-sixteenths of an inch. It can pass through the smallest screens and is great for sprucing up old recipes.
Did you know you can use pecan meal as you would flour? Pecan meal, also referred to as pecan flour, is perfect for breading meats when preparing a delicious dinner. You can also use it to help enrich your favorite pecan pie recipe.
Pecan meal has a nutty flavor that adds a unique touch to your home-brewed beer. If you are a fan of craft beers, add pecan meal to your mash bill for a truly distinct taste.
Consistent Wholesale Pecan Supply
Finding bulk pecans at decent prices can be challenging when taking into account the season, pecan yield, and competition. The price of wholesale pecan nuts does change from year to year. It all depends on availability. If there are limitations because of smaller harvests or increased demand, don’t be surprised by fluctuating prices.
Whether you own a small sweet shop or run a grocery chain, locking in your bulk pecan price is the best way to save on time and money. Consider a wholesale pecan contract to eliminate worries about your pecan supply getting too low.
Where can I find bulk pecans for sale near me?
If you are interested in buying bulk pecans or wholesale pecans and are based in the U.S., we would love to help. Millican Pecans are harvested at peak freshness from their orchards in San Saba, Texas.
Millican Pecans has you covered whether you are a business owner seeking a reputable pecan nut supplier or a nut enthusiast needing to re-stock your pantry. We offer whole pecans, halves or pieces, pecan meal, gift baskets or gift tins, pecan jellies, treats, and pies.
Do you run a gift shop or are you a vendor at a local farmer’s market? Maybe you run a bakery, restaurant, or gourmet food shop. Millican Pecans have caught national attention, having been featured on television shows and in popular food magazines. Don’t be surprised if these sweet, buttery morsels become a quick favorite.

]]>This holiday is an excellent way for students of math to spread the knowledge of Pi over a great ice-breaker, Pie. It’s this coming Saturday so be prepared with amazing baked goods like Millican's famous Pecan Pie and more. Here are some exciting facts about 3.14 and why it’s celebrated.
Pi (π) was first calculated by one of the best mathematicians of his period, Archimedes of Syracuse. However, it was not observed as a holiday until centuries later. The idea was proposed over three decades ago by the Exploratorium Museum’s physicist Larry Shaw. As an international holiday, people from the math and educational communities plan festivities with crafts, costumes and, best of all, pies.
Coincidentally, Pi Day also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday. Why not honor Einstien’s contributions to the science and math communities while simultaneously praising the incredible measurement of a circle. After all, Piday.org sums up the importance of this calculation by stating Pi is an “irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern.” So far, it has been calculated to the trillionth digit after the decimal point. If you plan on joining in the Pie festivities, join in the conversation using this brief history.
Buy pecans for sale... and chopped pecan pieces, too!
Pie and round baked goods have been used to spread the word about 3.14159 (π) since the holiday’s inception in 1988. Who wouldn’t enjoy a delicious slice of pecan pie while learning about math? It would certainly make memorizing a mathematical equation a little more digestible. Understanding the pieces of pie is always easier with a hands-on approach. So here is a delectable pie recipe that will have you eager to celebrate Pi Day every year.
Prepare a pie crust using your favorite recipe. Place it, unbaked, into a 9-inch round baking pan. We’re keeping it round for Pi Day!

This is not all of our Famous Pecan Products but rather a sampling of them.
Forget about pushing over-priced wrapping paper, or trying to get people to buy a $16 frozen pizza. Why? There’s another option. With the ever growing popularity of pecans and the wide range of products now available, a pecan fundraiser may be just what your group needs to help fund their next project!
If you have children in school, then you are likely familiar with various fundraisers. There are countless types to choose from – from pizzas to candy, magazines and more. A pecan fundraiser is very similar in the fact that your group will be selling a physical product to the consumer. In this particular instance, the product would be pecans and pecan related products.
As with any fundraiser that you want to be successful, it is important to ensure that you have an array of quality products to offer your potential buyers. The popularity of pecans only continues to grow, and there are several different types of pecans, pecan candies and more now available; making them a wonderful fundraising option. So what is the next step? Make sure that you plan your fundraiser at least 12 weeks ahead of the holidays. This tends to be a great time for fundraisers, as people are gearing up for gift shopping and thinking about what treats they want to have available for their guests.
Like other fundraisers, a small catalogue of the pecan products available will be provided to each of your group members to help aid in sales. The catalogue will provide brief descriptions of each of the available products, images and price points for each. Simply present the catalogue to family, friends, neighbors and colleagues and ask if they would be interested in supporting your group by making a purchase. Just a fair warning: pecans do tend to sell themselves, so don’t be surprised if the order forms come back full!
Order forms are also included and will serve as a guide throughout the order, collection and delivery process. Once the pre-defined ordering period has ended, simply collect the forms and funds and send them off for processing and order fulfillment. Your group will receive the agreed upon commissions for your efforts once your orders and payment have been processed.
Pecans are one of the healthiest nuts in the world, and may very well be considered the world’s next superfood. Yes, really!
You’re probably used to seeing them covered in caramel and dipped in chocolate, baked into a super- sweet pie, or candied. However, when right from the shell, they are pretty darn amazing. In fact, you can actually obtain 10% of your recommended daily dietary fiber, 19 vitamins and minerals, and a nice dose of antioxidants, too! If that’s not enough, the delicious, buttery-sweet flavor of a Texas pecan is practically unbeatable. If you have yet to try a 100% Texas pecan, prepare yourself, because you’re about to fall in love.
These Texas pecan fundraiser products also make amazing gift ideas. Almost everyone loves pecan pies and candies. Of course, consumers can also purchase pecan halves and pieces that are just perfect for bakers. Bake them into your favorite desserts, create pecan meal to use in place of corn meal when breading fish, or toss a handful onto a bed of greens for added flavor and nutrients. There are so many ways to enjoy pecans!
As you can see, holding a great fundraiser for your school or group can be a delicious success. Because pecans are so popular and make great gift ideas, they tend to sell quite well. Texas pecans are also a wonderful product that your friends, family and colleagues will look forward to buying again and again.
Earn some money for your school or group’s next adventure today with a pecan fundraiser!
]]>Rich in family history and tradition dating back to 1888, Millican Pecan Company was developed following the patriarch E.E. Risien’s founding of the West Texas Pecan Nursery. The great-great-grandfather of Winston Millican President of Millican Pecan Company, E.E. Risien, through innovative agricultural science, developed most of the more notable varieties of pecans including the: San Saba Improved, Texas Prolific, Onliwon, Squirrel Delight, No.60, and Western Schley to name just a few. So many varieties were developed here, this part of Texas is known as the "Pecan Capital of the World."
Millican Pecan Companies original orchard planted by E.E. Risien is located at the joining of the Colorado and San Saba Rivers within San Saba County in the Texas Hill Country. This orchard is home to “The Mother Tree” where the success of Millican Pecan Company began. From this location and others, using the many great pecan varieties developed, Millican Pecan Company produces the most delightful and tasty pecan products. Pies, candies, preserves, cooking oils and shelled pecans are just part of their extensive product line.
Winston and his wife Kristen both graduated in 2003 from Texas A&M University and moved back to San Saba, Texas to establish their family. They combined Winston’s experience in farming and all aspects of pecans with Kristen’s love for cooking and Millican Pecan Company was added to a family business history that spans five generations. You can reach them at winston@pecancompany.com or kristen@pecancompany.com.
Millican Pecan Company continues to break new ground and pursue new markets yet never forgets it heritage and family tradition of excellence. Millican Pecan Company is where old fashioned goodness and state of the art technology meet, delivering quality pecan products from our orchard to you!
]]>I enjoy restoring older pecan equipment to resale. I find old pieces of machinery at auctions or from individual sellers and buy them, repair them, paint them, and re-purpose them. Sometimes it’s re-purposing them for my own use and other times I turn around and sell them. Many times the equipment I find is in another state, so I load up my trailer, take a friend or family member with me, and take off after it. I’ve traveled to Georgia, Kentucky, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Indiana and many parts of Texas to pick up my finds. I also enjoy traveling. I’ve been to forty-five of the fifty states in the United States. Most of those trips were spent traveling in the car. That’s my favorite way to travel. I believe that part of the trip is exploring along the way. And the best way to do that is in a car. It’s amazing the places you will find on the small country roads rather than by plane or even by staying on the interstates. I also enjoy serving in different capacities at my church. I help lead our youth group on Wednesday nights, I’m an elder on our leadership board and I like helping with different outreach projects that our church does for our community. This summer Kristen and I and another couple had the opportunity to serve as the leaders of 15th Annual Mission San Saba where we rehabbed a house and turned it into a home for a single mom and her two boys. We had over 200 people donate money to the project and over 200 people show up to help with the project throughout the week. It was a large undertaking and we look forward to next years project.
I love to travel across the United States to see how other people live and explore new territory. Most vacations tend to be road trips that stay away from cities and major roads. That is the way I was raised and that is how it is for my girls. Being a small business owner, most of my vacations are dual purpose - to have fun and to sell pecans! The last few years, we have taken pecan product samples with us on the road to find new wholesale customers. This last summer we went to the Grand Canyon and the west coast. We stayed with friends in El Paso and toured their pecan farm to learn about how they grow pecans. It was a totally different technique than the way we grow pecans in central Texas since they have less rainfall per year than we do. The highlight of the trip for me was to see the orchards and vineyards of the Central Valley in California. They were in the middle of almond harvest, as well as tomato and onion harvest. The vast orchards were incredible to witness. We never pass up the opportunity to stop at Farmer's Markets to gain new insights in how they market their crops and how we could improve in marketing our pecans.
In years past, we have been to the east coast to tour pecan and peach orchards in Georgia. Since there are a limited number of pecan shelling plants locally, we contacted several operations to take tours of shelling and processing plants across the pecan belt. From nurseries that sell pecans to orchards, the management for pecan scab is a foreign concept from what we deal with in central Texas. A few of our trips have require us to pull a trailer for equipment. Our trips have taken us to the Midwest states of Illinois and Indiana during corn harvest to get farm equipment and tractors. There is always something to be seen in rural America that are unique to the region.
Our family has been harvesting pecans since 1888. My great-great grandfather started the first pecan orchard in San Saba, Texas in the early 1900s and really helped establish San Saba as "The Pecan Capital of the World". He put great emphasis on developing new varieties of pecans from his nursery and was responsible for developing soft "paper shell pecans" which had a huge impact on the pecan industry. Instead of people having to work tirelessly to crack the hard shelled pecans that natively grow in Texas, consumers were now able to more easily crack pecans and enjoy the sweet meat inside. Five generations later, I am responsible for managing over 12,000 pecan trees, which is about 1,000 acres. Farming is something that is in my blood. I value the land that has been passed down from my ancestors and I recognize the rarity of still having that land in our family. As a result Kristen and I, along with my parents, have recently purchased another 150 acres in Eastern San Saba County with the anticipation of planting another pecan orchard. Along with pecan orchards and river bottoms, Millican Pecan Company has a pecan shelling plant where we remove the pecan shells from the pecan meat. We have sorters and sizing equipment to add value to the pecans themselves. We typically shell pecans from October to March with the busy season being November and December. The remaindered pecans are stored in our cold storage facility until our customers are ready for them. This freezer is the cornerstone of our pecan candy factory. We have a commercial kitchen where we turn our pecans into pies and candy. The majority of our pecans are sold via our website, MillicanPecan.com. It has and will continue to be a work in progress. We started the website from our college apartment and we still have longtime customers from that time period. It was always my grandfather's idea to keep diversified operation. While we are vertically integrated with our pecans, we also have other interest. In addition to pecans, our family also harvests wheat. We've been growing wheat for 25 years now. My dad was the one responsible for initiating the establishment of the wheat crops that we produce. Now we harvest about 500 acres of wheat each year and graze out or bale the remainder. This fall I hope to plant 1000 acres into small grains if the weather cooperates. We have been No Till since 2008 but recently starting using a strip till rig for fertilizer placement. Our mother cows are primarily Angus and Herford crosses. They produc gentle calves for us to put on wheat. Since our farmland has outpaced our ranch land, we do not have enough stocker calves of our own to put on wheat. We partner with some locals to put their calves on us as well. This helps offset the production cost of wheat and we do not have to rely solely on the grain market. To offset some of production cost, we lease our land out to deer hunters. We have approximately 35 deer hunters who enjoy hunting our low fence ranch. We have any activities in the fall and winter with harvest and deer season and this wouldn't be possible without the help from our seasonal help.
I personally would like to be Chairman of our Pecan Federal Marketing Order (FMO). I really like working with marketing strategies and developing techniques to drive sales. The FMO has an estimated budget of 7-8 million dollars annual and I would like to be involved with the process of how it is spent. Some of the steps I think are necessary is becoming the President of the Texas Pecan Growers Association. These goals require dedicated time to each one. At this particular phase of life, I do not have the time required to give to these efforts because I have small children and volunteer at my church. I think the Aglead-FarmLead program could help develop new skills needed to be an effective communicator for the Ag industry.
Over the last few years, having lots of windshield time driving tractors, audiobooks have become an enjoyable pastime. I often ask people I respect what books they have been reading. On one such occasion, San Saba’s county judge sent me a reading list of several great books including Eric Metaxas’s Seven Men: And the Secret of Their Greatness. When talking about men like Wilbur Wilberforce (freed the slaves in England) and Dietrich Bonhoeffer (tried unsuccessfully to overthrow Hilter), one can only image what obstacles and obstruction they faced daily. Giving the set of circumstances, their perseverance and their character helped solidify them as great men. They had an eternal hope that did not disappoint. In fact, Bonhoeffer was killed by Nazis weeks before the war was over. It is easy to lead when things are going great, but when things are bad, it takes a strong leader to step in and change direction. Deep faith in a greater good propelled these men to do hard things that were not expected of them. They went against the grain of society and cultural norms. For that, they can be commended.
I want to participate in the Aglead-FarmLead program to grow and learn new things. I am a “Hands On” learner so the experiences that this program would entail would help with my agricultural leadership. The governmental part of agriculture is very important to farmers, but it is uncharted territory for me. I would like to gain more understanding for the legislative process. The other participants that are selected are also going to be a great source of knowledge and I look forward to meeting them and building working relationships with them. If selected. I plan to use the experiences that I learn from other producers, not only in my business and farming practices, but to help others as well. In the agriculture industry, we have to help educate people about what is important to us. The natural resources we are entrusted with must be preserved for future generations. We have an agricultural story and we need to share it.
The greatest obstacle facing agriculture today is having less than 2% of the population involved in the production of agriculture and the other 98% not knowing where their food comes from or how it is produced.
]]>Not so certain that the majority of the delicious pecans you enjoy today are a result of one tree? Believe it! You see, what many do not realize is that the pecan is a tree that does not duplicate itself through seedlings. E.E. Risien, the man that saved the thin-shelled San Saba Mother Pecan tree, didn’t realize it either. Not at first, anyway.
Risien had quite an affinity for pecans. In fact, he enjoyed the natural delicacies so much that he organized a pecan show – believed to be the very first – in hopes that he would find a superior specimen of pecan. Well, he did. Unfortunately, when Risien asked if he could see the tree the pecans came from, the winning exhibitor brought him to a tree that had been sawed down into practically nothing. Only a single branch of the tree remained! The exhibitor had sawed off all of the other branches in order to harvest the nuts.
Eventually, Risien purchased the land that the prize producing pecan tree was on and, over time, it regrew its crown. It also began producing its thin-shelled fruits again. This likely fueled Risien’s dream. He wanted a whole orchard of these trees. Because of this, he tried desperately to replicate the tree that produced those delicious pecans he had fallen in love with. After decades of work and more than 1000 pecan nuts that failed to produce trees bearing the same fruit, he finally figured out that budding and grafting could provide the prized pecans he dreamed his orchard would hold.
Today, the tree is known as a San Saba Pecan. Risien named it appropriately after the county and town it was grown in and the river that hydrated its roots. This “Mother Tree” went on to help create several popular varieties, including the San Saba Improved, Squirrel’s Delight, and Western Schley. Of course, countless more varieties were developed from this tree as well. And Risien? Well, he did develop that dream orchard he had always intended. In fact, he became the father of the pecan industry and the reason that San Saba is now known as “The Pecan Capital of the World”.
Although the true age of the San Saba Pecan is unknown, it is clear that groves of mature pecan trees existed in the San Saba region as far back as the mid-1700s, which is when Coronado and other explorers came upon them. Of course, the early settlers did not look at the pecan in the same way as the Native Americans. It was not originally thought of as a source of food or revenue. Because of this, these trees were not important. In fact, it is believed that thousands of pecan trees were cut down by early settlers to make way for farm land and fields for grazing cattle.
Once people began to realize just how good pecans were and how many different recipes they could be used in, these trees became more popular. Harvesting the nuts was often done by lopping off entire branches. This harvesting method was responsible for the discovery of pecan wood as a viable option for flooring and furniture making. Of course, this resulted in even more of the trees being cut down. It wasn’t until Risien established his orchard and embarked upon a mission to make these nuts known worldwide that the tree became more respected and the pecan industry was truly born.
With such a rich history behind it, the San Saba is the pecan that sets the bar for all other pecans. This historic tree has paved the way for a wide array of varieties and inspired countless recipes that will be prepared for generations.

It might take a widespread natural disaster or political undermining to create scarcity in the food supply, but I think it will happen. It’s not very realistic for someone who is surrounded by pavement to be able to grow 100% of their food. While we have a stable food supply currently in the United States, what would it look like if it was disrupted?
The learning curve for growing a safe food supply is steep. I learned from my dad, who learned from his dad. Many mistakes had been made in the past to learn the proper and efficient way to grow. You can learn a lot from google and the internet but experience is still the best teacher.
Most people in aren’t in agriculture for the money. Margins are tight, effort is extensive but the rewards are great. Planting a seed and seeing grow and mature into its full potential is something I take for granted. When I plant- I expect a bountiful harvest and come this spring, I expect a great crop of pecans in the pecan orchards.
I don’t always write my feelings down about certain topics- especially for the world to see. I know some people that wrote in the 1940’s opinions and had very skewed views in today’s culture. Regardless, do you have any thoughts about this? Let me know what you think!

Now for some this may be an obvious and you’ve been doing this for years or for others this may not seem like help at all because of the time it takes to plan ahead, but let me explain what I mean by meal planning.
Meal planning for me means a plan with flexible options. This means not coming home at 5 o’clock with the burning question, “what’s for dinner.” Now, instead of going to the store with my list of potatoes, onions, butter, milk, cheese, etc. and still not knowing what to fix for supper, I go with specific meals in mind and buy those specific ingredients. Now, this does not mean Monday – meatloaf, Tuesday – tacos, etc. Of course, if you want to get that specific then you can. But for me, I like to have more flexibility in my schedule. So I plan for five meal options for the entire week that I can work in wherever they best fit. I plan for five meals because I figure at least one night we will have leftovers. Another night can be something simple like sandwiches or you might allow yourself one night to eat out each week. Let me just say, a well thought out plan can go a long way and I promise you, if you will make yourself take the time to plan out your meals before you go to the store, it will take so much pressure off you during the busy week.
For example, the week of meals might look like this: spaghetti, chicken and rice, green chili burritos, oven bar-b-que chicken and beef pot pie. Now spaghetti, green chili burritos and oven bar-b-que chicken come together fairly quickly, so these are flexible and can be made whichever night they sound good. In other words, you’re not locked into any one dish on any specific night. Whereas chicken and rice and beef pot pie may take a little longer. Use these on a Saturday or Sunday when you have more time. Also, try your best to cook on the nights you are home and save the eating out or leftover night for one of those back to back meeting/practice nights. It’s best to decide what you will have for supper that morning so you can layout the meat for thawing. This frees your mind up for the rest of the day, not to think about it again until you are home, pulling your freshly thawed meat out of the fridge and begin cooking. What a beautiful thought!
You can take this idea a bit further if you’re feeling really organized and ambitious. Cook a large cut of meat such as a roast or ham on the days you have more time such as Saturday or Sunday, get one meal out of it then and use the leftovers later in the week in a new dish. Also, try to think ahead. On the nights your home, cook more meat than you need that one night and save the rest for later. For example, for green chili burritos you only need one pound of hamburger meat, but go ahead and brown two pounds and use the other pound of hamburger meat for your beef pot pie tomorrow. Done and done!
I first discovered meal planning with “Passion for Savings” where she used it as a budgeting tool, and boy does it help! Meal planning prevents the unplanned eating out, prevents groceries from going to waste and can actually keep you from the same old’ routine. So, here’s to a new school year, may it be filled with delicious, well-planned meals that keep your budget on track and you in control! Happy Meal Planning!
